The Fauna
Friday, 18 September 2009 15:41

At the base of the food pyramid in the Magredi, there is a vegetation comprised of arid meadowlands and shrubs. At the second level, there are herbivores such as the hare, whereas at the higher level birds of prey such as the coluber are to be found, and on top there are the super birds of prey such as the black kite.

The main bird species of prey are:

  • golden eagle (aquila chrysaetos) – rarely to be seen
  • buzzard (buteo buteo)
  • kite (milvus migrans)
  • kestrel (falco tinnunculus).

The Magredi represent, moreover, a kind of last haunt for many bird species such as:

  • alaudidi (skylarks)
  • motacillidae (pipits)
  • little ringed plover (charadrius dubius)
  • grey partridge (perdix perdix)
  • stone curlew (burhinus oedicnemus).

The Magredi are a transit area flown over by many migrating bird species.

  • Among them, there are:
  • European roller (coracias garrulus)
  • common crane (grus grus)
  • white stork (ciconia ciconia)
  • great spotted cuckoo (clamator glandarius) – extraordinarily to be seen.

Going towards the resurgences, great egret (egretta alba) can sometimes be seen.

Lepre

In the Magredi, there is also a large number of mammalians. Among them, some little rodents like the fieldmouse are particularly numerous. The fox (vulpes vulpes) is also common, whereas the presence of badger (meles taxus) and roe deer (capreolus capreolus) is occasional and very interesting.

It must also be pointed out that these places are the most characteristic biotype for the hare (lepus europaeus).

Among the birds that nest on the ground of the Magredi, the stone curlew is the most peculiar. Both its eggs and its plumage can perfectly camouflage among the grass.

Over time, these birds have got used to the presence of the armored tanks and their presence was permanent until a few years ago. But now, they are in danger due to the off-road amateurs and their races (which take place even inside the SCI), whose number of followers is increasing every year.

These people can freely move inside the SCI because there are neither rules nor control to protect this area.

Another cause is represented by the transit of flocks in the breeding season, thus, resulting in the fact that in the past seasons the stone curlews have been forced to find a shelter among the neighbouring sowable lands. The situation of these birds points out all the contradictions concerning an area which, on one hand, has been recognised of European importance, but which, on the other hand, doesn’t actually have a real regulation system to manage, for a common interest, the main activities and movements in such a precious land for its environmental importance.
